Abstract

This piece will celebrate past and future black head coaches en order to encourage black men and women to enter this field. The history of Black coaches in America is a story of determination, groundbreaking achievements, and ongoing struggles for representation and equity. From the NFL creating the Rooney rule “that is a National Football League policy that requires league teams to interview ethnic-minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs. Initially, the program mandated interviews with underrepresented minority groups, aligning with modern Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Principles.” Many Black head coaches have had to overcome these circumstances. The black head coach has to be better than their counterparts that don’t match their resumes or experience.

It is an especially important topic for me because I have always been interested the history of coaching but the current state of black head coaches in sports in 2025 and beyond. One of the reasons I wanted to become a coach was seeing how black coaches lead their respective teams in games and off the court. One of the reasons why I choose this topic of the history black head coaches was because of their accomplishments. One example is Tony Dungy a former NFL head coach. According to USAToday.com “Tony Dungy the first Black head coach to win a Super Bowl.” My interest in this topic and in coaching in general is because of the is statistics.  According to USAToday.com “43.5% of coaches in the NFL identify as non-white.” This statistic is like a call for help to give more people of color a chance to coach the game they love.
