Personal blog: Coaching basketball

Mentality

The mentality while coaching basketball is to always win games and make sure to help individual players get better and develop in the game of basketball. My mentality when coaching basketball is to keep my players motivated and keep their confidence up. The purpose of coaching basketball is to always win the game. It's just I feel like that’s the way it should be. I don’t like the small victories when teams lose. As a basketball coach, you want to enforce effort and good basketball. My job as a basketball coach is to learn my player's abilities to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. My job is also to fix my player's weaknesses and to help use their strengths in key moments in ball games. In the game of basketball coaches have to be mentally focused calm and in control.

Managing the Personalities

Managing the personalities of a basketball team as a coach is not an easy job. The way I handle their personalities is to make every player feel like they're on the same level. Each basketball player is different and so are their personalities. Some players are better than others. We call them superstars and the others are role players. The difference between the two is that superstar players are better than the others in terms of skills and talent. Role players do the little things like rebounding, blocking, and playing defense. The way to handle these two types of players is to keep them humble and make sure one player’s ego is not bigger than another. It makes my life easier to handle a basketball team. I think this tactic keeps the whole team accountable and helps manage egos. I also believe that players who study the game and want to learn the game of basketball will succeed.

“Striving for Greatness”

“Striving for Greatness” is a phrase LeBron James uses and I internalized when I was playing basketball. I want my players to follow because  I want them to reach the highest limit possible in the game of basketball. Striving for greatness can be achieved in all aspects of life. I want to teach my players that on and off the court. You strive to be great and that striving off the court can help you on the court. One example of striving for greatness for me while I’m coaching basketball is having my players doing well in school which means you can play and stay on the floor. The other way that my players can strive for greatness is training outside of practice In my opinion, if you train off the court it makes basketball easier in practice and in games. Striving for greatness is what I used as a player and it worked out for me but applying it as a coach is sometimes hard to do because most players don’t want to be great and that can take some time to manage.

Finding Players That Help You Win

As a basketball coach, you want the best starting five on the court to increase your chances to win a basketball game. You have to have the right players that match your attitude, attention, and mindset. One piece of advice for basketball coaches is to make your job is to recruit the players that match what you want. Personally, the type of players I want on my team are hard workers, great defensive players, and ones who can shoot the basketball. I also want players to be great on the court and be great off the court. I want players who are professional off the court meaning that as a basketball player, I want players to give one hundred percent in school and that helps the community. I think it’s important to establish a great culture in a basketball program and make sure everyone knows what the standards are on a basketball team.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I want to tell you about my personal goals for coaching basketball for high school and Amateur Athletic Union basketball. My goal is to win as many games as possible and to win championships as well. My goal is to also help young men and women who need help get better while playing basketball and off the court. My personal goal in basketball is to keep learning and improving my knowledge of the game of basketball. I want to learn from other coaches so I can be better while I coach. I also want my players to get better because if they improve they get better opportunities for scholarships. Coaching basketball professionally is one of the most important goals. When I do eventually get there, the goal is to win an NBA title and to win coach of the year. The other goal is to be the highest-paid NBA head coach. Coaching basketball is more than just a game to me, I feel that I can help struggling kids that need guidance and structure in order to succeed.

Brief Description:  Jeff Haefner’s “Why you need a ”Team Identity” And Important Club Guidelines For Developing Players. Explains the importance of strong identity for a team. This blog also explains how basketball players understand their role on the team.Jeff’s blog helps make positive behavior and establish growth for their players. He believes that establishing growth with payers helps them on and off the court. The team identity he believes helps basketball become a successful team.

  • Reasons for liking the blog: The reason why I like this blog is that breakdown each section. Another reason for liking this blog is that I get to learn more about basketball than I thought I knew. I get to learn defensive strategies and more about basketball IQ. I also learned how to help my players execute plays and how to help them. I also learned how to teach rebounding and how they have to buy into this method.

  • Strengths: The strength of this blog is Jeff’s clear focus. His article highlights team identity and how important that is for a basketball team. Another strength of this blog is the advice and tips. The advice helps basketball teams develop players and how the tips could be applied in leadership. This article strength is to also provide from both on-court behavior and off-court behaviors. This may help coaches and players who probably don’t know their roles on their respective teams.

  • Areas of improvement:The improvement that this article needs is more example of how players didn’t buy into the team's identity. I would've a good example or case because as a coach I want to learn so it won’t happen me. improvement needed in this article is to know more tactics and strategies that helped him build team identity. Its important for upcoming coaches to learn or to use more tactics to build a team identity.

Analysis of the blog:

  • Reasons for liking the blog: The reason why I liked this blog was the personal narrative by Jordan. Giving his story about coaching at the college level. I like this article because it emphasizes networking and building relationships in basketball. I believe that is smart advice because you can get a job if you know somebody. I like that he advises you to keep realistic expectations for your team. I believe that smart because some coaches push expectations on teams that are not good enough to win right away.

  • Strengths: The strength of this article is how Jordan shares his personal experience while coaching basketball. In this article, he shared how he coached in college. I like the way Jordan outlined how upcoming coaches should be focused on. According to Bobby Jordan “Besides teaching the basics of the game, you also need to teach players how to have a positive attitude, develop team dynamics, and set a strong example”. This quote best explains how he viewed coaching basketball.

  • Areas of improvement: The area of Improvement that this area needs is the depth of content. The provides great insight in coaching basketball games but should provide more examples. The other area of improvement is more voices and more coaches should have been added to the author article.Bobby Jordan also should have offered a wide range view of coaching college basketball. According to Bobby Jordan “coaching in college basketball is not an exact science. Most high school seniors head to college thinking about majoring in business or marketing”.
